Create::Design::Tell::Story

We’ve begun a new project in all IARC classes called “OPUS”. This means a creative piece of work in any field of the arts. In this project we are to record our world through writing, drawing, thinking and collage. Each week we will be given a set of words that will be defined using words and pictures.
This was the first week and the words were :
STORIES
ARTIFACTS
MULTI VIEW
CYCLE
TRANSLATION

STORIES – Throughout the week we came across reading fairytales. A fairytale is a made up story that is used to entertain children. To me there are many kinds of stories. A story is something people write to express their lives. As well as made up things that create a fictitious image in ones minds. This is an example of some images that popped into my mind when reading the fairytale “Rapunzel”. There is another kind of story that was talked about in History class. Eventually a building creates its own story. Roth says " Architecture is the unavoidable art. Every moment, awake or asleep, we are in buildings, around buildings, in spaces defined by buildings, or in landscapes shaped by a human artifice." (Roth 3) Our stories are most of the time created by our sorroundings. In many cases our surroundings are our friends, places we've been to, or situations that we go through. But have we ever thought about the buildings around us? They to have a story. The reason is that before a building is made there is a story behind it. The architect/engineer creates an image in his head that came from something perhaps previously lived. Eventually the building is constructed and it itself has a story to represent it.

ARTIFACTS – Many things that we have around us are artifacts. An artifact is something constructed by a human being that eventually becomes historical, or has a meaning in our lives. In drawing class we drew 5 “artifacts” that have an importance in our lives. Each one took me back to the moment in my life that the object portrayed. According to History class, an artifact corresponds to patterns in the mind of the producer and user, and can be assessed by description, deduction and speculation.

MULTIVIEW – The meaning of this word is to view an object, or an image, from many directions. This gives us the opportunity to see the different sides of things and being able to easily contrast. In drafting class, we were to design a piece of furniture that could be viewed differently from all sides. This creates a way of looking at things distinctly on all four sides.
Architecturally speaking, I feel that architecture has multi views. It can be viewed in many different ways. It can tell a story, it can shape our music or it can eventually shape our lives.

CYCLE- When I think about this word it makes me think process. There are many types of cycles. In example, a weather cycle, life cycle but one cycle that we learned about is the drawing cycle. In history class we learned that in design there is a process that eventually either changes or either has no change, Like Winston Churchill said, “ We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.” (Roth 103) This shows that within the cycle of time eventually the way certain rooms or building are designed are used for one purpose, which lead our ways to accommodating to the style of the building. This eventually becomes a cycle that within time creates an impact to our society.

TRANSLATION – A translation is a way to make something complicated easier to comprehend. An example would be an assignment that we did in one of our classes. We read a fairytale and translated it to pictures, or it could be vise versa where you take a picture and create a story of your own. When making the inspiration board many people had no words and just pictures, this made you come up with a story of your own. Translating such things make it easier to follow and see visually. Another interpretation of translation is taking a different language and converting it into the language that is desired. So in many ways translation can be interpreted differently.
“Our eyes are made to see forms in light” (Roth 63), this quote makes me think of how everything we see we interpret in a different way.

Overall I feel that each of these words tie together because we use different artifacts to create a story and in a way the story creates a cycle in which we place things in certain order to create the final story. This story is then translated by others and each person interprets and views the story differently like we did in the movie "Midsummers Night Dream".
